We continued the experiments on granular damping, this time with a steadily driven system. That is, we took large boxed filled with grains, put them on a rail and drove them back and forth with a stepper motor. Of course the setup was again surrounded by high-speed cameras, and additionally we could measure the force that the motor transmitted to the box while driving which gave us a way to calculate energy dissipation. We also brought back our 16 springs for further parameter studies. |
Our first parabolic flight! We were ambitious and brought 3 experiments: a freely cooling granular gas, a set of 16 springs with attached granular damper for a detailled parameter study and a set of 2 large grain filled boxes attached to springs and surrounded by high-speed cameras to take an in-depth look at the granular dynamics inside. |
